Academy Award winner Meryl Streep will head the cast of the film of Mamma Mia!, which will be produced by Universal in partnership with Playtone and Littlestar.

Variety reports that Streep will play the role of single mother Donna Sheridan, the part created on Broadway by Louise Pitre. Producers include Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman; executive producers are Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson as well as ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.

Phyllida Lloyd, who directed both the London and Broadway mountings of the international hit musical, will make her feature-film directing debut on "Mamma Mia!," which will begin shooting this summer in both Greece and London. The screenplay has been penned by Catherine Johnson, who wrote the book for the musical.

Producer Craymer told the industry paper, "[Meryl Streep] was always at the top of our wish list, and she encapsulates the spirit and energy and has the powerhouse qualities that character requires."

Although Streep has previously sung in the films "Postcards From the Edge" and "A Prairie Home Companion," "Mamma Mia!" would be her first movie musical.

Mamma Mia! employs the hit songs of famed pop group ABBA to tell the story of Sophie Sheridan, a young girl who hopes to discover the identity of her father. On the eve of her wedding, she brings three men from her mother Donna's past back to the Greek island they visited over two decades ago.

Mamma Mia! features music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, a book by Catherine Johnson, direction by Phyllida Lloyd and choreography by Anthony Van Laast. In New York, the musical plays the Winter Garden Theatre, which is located at 1634 Broadway.

Meryl Streep won Academy Awards for her performances in "Sophie's Choice" and "Kramer vs. Kramer." She was also Oscar-nominated for her work in "Adaptation," "Music of the Heart," "One True Thing," "The Bridges of Madison County," "Postcards from the Edge," "A Cry in the Dark," "Ironweed," "Out of Africa," "Silkwood," "The French Lieutenant's Woman" and "The Deer Hunter." Streep received a Tony nomination for 27 Wagons Full of Cotton, and her other Broadway appearances include Happy End, The Cherry Orchard, Secret Service and Trelawny of the "Wells". Streep was most recently on the New York stage in the Public Theater's presentation of Mother Courage.

Brosnan set for 'Mamma Mia!'
Actor cast opposite Streep in ABBA musical

Pierce Brosnan will star opposite Meryl Streep in "Mamma Mia!," the film adaptation of the hit musical for Universal and producing partners Playtone and Littlestar.
Pic begins shooting June 25 in London and Greece.
Brosnan sang a few Irish standards in the indie drama "Evelyn," and sang onstage early in his career. But this will be a decided departure for an actor best known for playing the steely James Bond.
Brosnan will play Sam, one of three men summoned to a Greek isle by a young woman who believes one of them is her father.
For Brosnan, the opportunity to belt out such ABBA standards as "S.O.S.," which will be a duet with Streep, was irresistible.
"I said yes right away because it meant working with Meryl Streep," Brosnan told Daily Variety. "Secondly, I saw the show with my family in London, and found it just so wonderfully happy and joyful, and so pitched in time forever in the 1970s. What a kick in the pants, to be able to go off and spend time with Meryl on some Greek island, singing ABBA songs."
"Mamma Mia!" is being produced by Littlestar's Judy Craymer and Playtone's Gary Goetzman and Tom Hanks. Rita Wilson will exec produce with Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, latter of whom wrote the tunes when they were the creative catalysts for ABBA.
"Pierce brings a certain smooch factor, and we think he'll have great chemistry with Meryl in a romantic comedy," Craymer said. "He is just the perfect choice."
Phyllida Lloyd, who directed "Mamma Mia!" in its London and Broadway runs, is helming the picture, which was scripted by Catherine Johnson. She wrote the book for the stage musical, which recently surpassed $2 billion in ticket sales in more than 140 cities since opening in 1999.
Brosnan takes the job while preparing a sequel to "The Thomas Crown Affair," which John Rogers scripted and Brosnan is producing under his Irish DreamTime banner. A director will be set shortly and production will begin before year's end.
Brosnan recently completed "Butterfly on a Wheel," a co-production between Irish DreamTime and Icon that will be distributed by Lionsgate, and he also recently shot "Married Life," a Sidney Kimmel Entertainment pic that will be released by MGM.

Mamma Meryl Streep starts learning the lip lock with Pierce Brosnan soon.
The Oscar-winning actress will begin crooning with the former 007 star in London at the beginning of vocal rehearsals for the movie based on the mega-hit stage musical Mamma Mia!, featuring the songs of Abba (sic) in which Meryl plays free-spirit Donna, whose daughter, Sophie, decides to get married.
One of the musical's main strands involves Donna's three former suitors, each of whom could be Sophie's father.
Brosnan will play rugged Sam and, I'm told, the film will focus more on his romance with Donna.
Colin Firth has been confirmed to play 'headbanger' Harry, while Stellan Skarsgard, a popular actor thanks to his Bootstrap Bill in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, is in final negotiations to play Bill. Interestingly, the part was ear-marked for his Pirates co-star Bill Nighy, but he has other plans.
An executive on the picture observed:'You'll certainly be able to tell that Donna slept with all of them'.
Meryl, a trained singer, will sing S.O.S. with Brosnan, before going on to warble numbers with her character's close friends, and one-time pop-group members, being played by Julie Walters (Rosie) and Christine Baranski (Tanya).
By the way, Ms Baranski played the hard-drinking Maryann in the Nineties TV sit-com Cybill (opposite Cybill Shepherd) and I recall Mamma Mia! boss Judy Cramer, who is also producing the film, telling me how Maryann was the inspiration for some of Tanya's character traits.
Three songs from the stage show - still enjoying a money-making run in the West End, now with Linzi Hately - have been dropped - Thank You For The Music, Under Attack and Knowing Me, Knowing You, although the movie introduces another Abba number, When All Is Said And Done.
Later this month, the whole cast of the film, including Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper, as the engaged couple, will be in London to record the score, then full rehearsals begin with director Phyllida Lloyd in May before ten weeks of filming at Pinewood in June, followed by five weeks' location shooting on a Greek island."

Ich komme gerade aus dem Kino und muss sagen, der Film ist sehr gut gemacht, sehr lustig, und obwohl die Schauspieler/innen alle keine Profisänger/innen sind, haben sie sich alle gut geschlagen.

ich war am Samstag im Kino. Ich muss sagen, der Film ist gut gemacht, aber sängerisch hat´s mir ganz und gar nicht gefallen. Auch haben einige Lieder gefehlt. Warum hat man den Brosnan nur singen lassen. Das war für mich das allerschrecklichste. Meine beiden begleiter ist es genauso gegangen. Einzig die Abba - Melodien die wünderschöne Gegend machen den Film schön.

Ich habe den Film vor ein paar Tagen gesehen und muss sagen - ich kam singend und mit richtig guter Laune aus dem Kino! Obwohl mir einige Lieder gefehlt haben - vor allem mein geliebtes Thank You for the music - und trotz des gesangs von Pierce Brosnan finde ich den Film wunderbar und werde ihn mikr vielleicht nochmal ansehen. In die DVD-Sammlung wird er jedenfalls aufgenommen!

Insgesamt hat der Film wirklich sehr viel vom Charme des Buehnenmusicals - nur etwas lebendiger eben und etwas mehr durch die filmerischen Moeglichkeiten erweitert. Gesanglich finde ich, dass man kaum merkt, dass da keine Musicaldarsteller am Werk sind. Denn wir duerfen ja nicht vergessen - ABBA waren Popmusik, nicht Musical. Nochmal meine Hochachtung fuer den Film, ich fand ihn grossartig.

Eigentlich bin ich immer ziemlich euphorisch, wenn ich ein Musical im Kino sehe (allein schon, weil es dann mit ziemlicher Sicherheit auch eine DVD-Fassung geben wird.....), bei Mamma Mia! hält sich meine Freude allerdings ein wenig in Grenzen. - Dafür kann der Film an sich wahrscheinlich wenig, eher die Musicalvorlage ist schuld. Diese besteht nämlich größtenteils aus einem freundlich hellen Set-Design (himmelblau und weiß), welches einfach für mich Mamma Mia! geprägt hat. Zwar kommt im Film das Urlaubs-feeling ziemlich gut rüber, aber immer irgendwie dunkler. Plötzlich sind's gelb- und braune Töne. Donna wirkt mir so negativ verzweifelt und die Pension fällt wirklich fast auseinander (also ICH will da keinen Urlaub machen...).
Was überhaupt nicht geht ist das Ende mit der sprudelnden Quelle... Gesanglich sind die meisten Darsteller okay - das mag ich eigentlich sogar, wenn der Gesang nicht studiotechnisch perfekt sondern noch menschlich klingt, aber Mr. Brosnans Fan war ich noch nie und werde ich nicht werden.

Insgesamt gebe ich nicht mehr als eine subjektive 3. Ohne die prägenden Erinnerungen an die Bühnenshow könnte es eine 2 werden...

Ich fand den Film auch nicht so super. Ich hab das Musical eben auch schon zweimal gesehen und ich finde, dass im Film nur ein Bruchteil der Energie rüberkam.
Und ich stimme dem zu, dass die Atmosphäre im Film irgendwie dunkler erscheint und die Sache mi t dem Brunnen am Ende der totale Reinfall war.
